The first floor has a living room, a foyer, and a large veranda with mahogany wood floors and a deck, and the second floor features four bedrooms. Plenty of art glass light sconces are everywhere, in keeping with Wright’s vision to bring as much light into the house as possible. The restoration project began in earnest in 1992 with the formation of the Martin House Restoration Complex (MHRC). Reconstruction of the site and of the building started in 1996 by the late Ted Lowney of HHL Architects, and was completed under the auspices of Matt Meier and Jamie Robideau. When the 34-year-old Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned by self-made millionaire Darwin D. Martin to design a family home in Buffalo, New York, the architect already had an impressive body of work behind him. While Buffalo is not technically part of the American Prairie, its location in western New York prompted the young architect to extend his then burgeoning style to the East.

The Barton House

The 1,668 square foot cottage, like other structures on the property, contains a signature pattern of art glass as well as built-in planters to bring nature closer to the interior. The Martin house was part of a larger complex, which ultimately included the Barton house; a long pergola connecting the Martin house to a glass-ceilinged conservatory and garage; and a gardener’s cottage. The remarkable leaded glass windows of the Martin house were fabricated by the Linden Glass Co. of Chicago. George Barton was married to the sister of Darwin D. Martin, an executive at the Larkin Soap Company in Buffalo, New York.
